Village Approved for Active Transportation Grant to Replace Sidewalks

The Village of Clinton has received $221,243 from the Province of British Columbia to replace the brick sidewalk along highway 97 with new cement sidewalks this summer. The project includes removal of the existing brick sidewalk, which will be replaced with concrete sidewalks. There have been problems with the brick sidewalk disintegrating, settling, and heaving, which can create an uneven surface and present challenges to mobility and snow clearing. The new pavement will be safer for pedestrians, and easier for strollers and wheelchairs to navigate.

The sidewalk will be replaced on both sides Highway 97 from MacDonald Ave. to Cariboo Avenue. Once the Village of Clinton awards the project to a contractor, we will begin construction. Further notices will be released when there is more information and when a firm timeline can be established.

The Village is looking at options to repurpose the bricks and will put out more information if they will be made available to residents.

The Village was not able to get the hydro poles moved as a part of this grant. We understand this is a challenge to mobility, and we will continue to look for solutions with BC Hydro to address this problem.

The Village will work with the Contractor to notify businesses and residents of when the sidewalk will be replaced. We will do our best to make sure there is as little disruption as possible to homes and businesses along the highway during construction.

Replacing these sidewalks has been a priority for many years and was most recently identified in the Village’s Age-Friendly Plan as a way to improve mobility supports for residents.

The grant covers 70% of the cost of the project. The Village’s contribution was set aside when the first application was submitted in 2022.

“We are thrilled by the province’s decision to invest in active transportation in Clinton. The replacement of the old brick sidewalks with new concrete ones addresses a long-standing challenge. This project will significantly improve access to our shops and businesses, particularly for those with mobility challenges, while enhancing the attractiveness of our business core. By making Clinton a more accessible community, it will be easier for people to engage in active lifestyles by walking to work or accessing essential services. We are grateful for this investment, which will benefit our residents and visitors alike.”
